简介：In front of the Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, Wang Er, a veteran of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, recalls his former mentors, guides, and comrades-in-arms. In that era of raging war, the iron hooves of the invading Japanese army trampled into Wang Er’s village. At fifteen or sixteen, Wang Er was timid and cowardly, helpless and adrift amid the shelling—until a squad of the Eighth Route Army rescued him. Thus he came to know the resourceful and courageous squad leader Zhao Zhen, the sharp-eyed scout Zhang Peng, the boisterous guard Sun Dazui, the cautious Liu Gui, the steady sniper Zhou Dabao, the kind-hearted medic Ye Lin, and Kobayashi Kenjiro, a former Japanese soldier who defected to the Eighth Route Army out of disgust for the war of aggression. The squad led by Zhao Zhen became separated from the main force after rescuing Wang Er. Together, they carry Wang Er with them, struggling through the Japanese blockade zone in search of their main unit. Amid the baptism of fire, each of them faces trials that push them beyond their own limits...
